"The Durango Business Improvement District worked closely with the City of Durango to establish outdoor space for businesses to use during the pandemic. The new space was a lifeline for many businesses whose indoor capacity was severely limited. After the crisis passed, we quickly realized the outdoor space was very valuable, and have been working with the City to explore how to make it permanent in some manner. One of the flaws with the original outdoor space was that it was located right next to traffic on Main Ave. in Downtown. MODSTREET’s pedlet allowed us to provide a real-life example to businesses and customers to show how outdoor space could be incorporated permanently in a small and compact Downtown. Moving the guests away from traffic by creating the pedlet sidewalk proved very popular. Every time I go by that area in our Downtown the outdoor seating is packed with customers!
