Evolution of Walkability
Durango, CO embarked on a transformative journey to establish a new pedestrian solution for their Main Avenue. These images vividly showcase the progressive evolution of the 700 block, now a secure and inviting pedestrian zone that enhances walkability and stimulates the local economy year after year.
2019 - Before the pandemic, public right-of-way was used for parking.
2022 - During the height of the pandemic, these spaces were repurposed for temporary, in-street outdoor dining. They featured various materials and designs, often obstructing historic building facades and small businesses along Main Avenue.
2023 - After years of trial and error, a MODSTREET Pedlet was installed, revitalizing the historical aesthetic and small-town charm of downtown Durango. Instead of in-street dining, the Pedlet diverts pedestrian traffic around bistro-style sidewalk seating. This enhancement boosted walkability and became a standout feature on Main Avenue.
